I don’t know about your family, but mine loves dessert. Cakes and cookies are delicious, but I love making them something that incorporates fruit, or other fresh ingredients. Make this fried plantains recipe called turon in just minutes and minimal ingredients!
This recipe is one example of a dessert that hits those marks. Turon is a sweet fried plantains egg roll. It is tasty, but not too heavy. It is a fun snack or dessert that you can prepare with your kids while learning a new technique.
While you may not have heard of it, turon is a popular snack in the Philippines. If it isn’t already a part of your culture, it can be a fun opportunity to learn with your kids while cooking. It utilizes some ingredients that are less common in traditional American fare, like plantains and jackfruit, so it can be a great way to branch out.
Why You'll Love This Fried Plantains Turon Recipe
- Kid Friendly – Kids love bananas! Plantains have a different flavor from the bananas your kids may be used to, but they will love the familiar elements. Plus, any dish involving rolling or assembling food in a crafty way is always a fun time to bring your kids into the kitchen. They will have a blast learning how to assemble and roll their turon.
- Fresh and Fried – This dish has the benefit of a crunchy, deep-fried taste, while being filled with fresh fruit containing lots of vitamins, antioxidants and fiber. It is certainly still a dessert, but it is a great divergence from heavier desserts with no nutritional value.
Ingredients For Turon
- Plantains – Plantains are filled with fiber, potassium, and vitamins a and b6. They are the star of this dish. Each wrapper will hold half of a plantain, so you will need 5 total. Make sure to use RIPE plantains! If you don't, it will be flavorless and not sweet enough. Saba bananas work well too!
- Brown Sugar – Brown sugar is what sweetens this dish. When you deep fry the rolls, the brown sugar combined with the moisture from the fruits will create a filling reminiscent of caramel.
• Jackfruit – Jackfruit adds a really lovely element of texture, plus a little bit of brightness to the flavor profile. If you plan to purchase fresh jackfruit, make sure that you get one that is ripe, but not overly ripe. Fresh jackfruit can be a bit of an adventure if you have never worked with it before. For this particular dish, canned jackfruit works fine as well! - Lumpia Wrappers also called Spring Roll Wrapper – Lumpia wrappers are slightly different from egg roll wrappers. If you can’t find any specifically labeled for lumpia, you can use traditional spring roll wrappers, as they are the same. Or, if you plan at least a day in advance, you can make your own lumpia wrappers at home with just a handful of ingredients.
- Cooking Oil – You will need enough cooking oil to completely cover the rolls, as they will be deep fried. Use your desired frying oil!
How to Make Turon
- Peel apart wrappers
- Cut the plantains lengthwise
- Place the brown sugar into a flat dish and roll the slices of banana completely covering each slice with generous amount of brown sugar.
- Add plantain and strips of jackfruit onto the wrapper and then roll. Fold both sides (left and right) of the wrapper inward towards the banana. Use water to moisten the wrappers so it is easier to fold. Now roll it towards the other end away from you. Use water again to seal the edge.
- Then coat the prepared "egg roll" with brown sugar and deep fry until golden brown
Step by Step Instructions
First, separate your wrappers and lay on a flat surface.
Next, remove the plantains out of its peel and peel bananas. Then slice your plantains lengthwise, so that you have 10 total halves.
Place your brown sugar on a plate or shallow dish, and roll each of your plantain slices in the brown sugar so that they are completely and generously coated.
Now it is time to assemble your rolls. Place one plantain half on each wrapper, towards the left side, and then add your strips of jackfruit on top of the banana. You do not want to overfill the wrappers!
Next, roll your turon! Fold your wrapper from left to right, so that the left side is completely closed. Then fold the top side down, and the bottom side up, and roll again.
When you near your last roll, dab a little bit of water on the final edge of the wrapper, so that when you fold it, it seals. If you are uncertain about the rolling, you can do a quick YouTube search for “turon” and you will find several demonstrations on how to do this part!
Finally, roll your turon in the remaining brown sugar, and deep-fry them until they are golden brown.
Allow to cool, and serve warm.
Cook's Tips
- When rolling your turon, handle the roll gently, but make an effort to keep your folds tight. Tighter folds will prevent it from falling apart. If you are struggling to hold the roll together, you can apply the small amount of water sooner. Just keep in mind that once the water is applied, the wrapper will stick to itself, and you will not have a lot of luck in taking it apart.
- If you are unable to find plantains, you can make this recipe with other varieties of banana. However, if you use regular bananas, you will want to cut them in half both ways, as American bananas will be too long for the wrapper. Some variations of turon include other fillings, such as mango, coconut, ube, or even cream cheese. They can be served as is, or topped with powdered sugar or a side of whipped cream, ice cream, or caramel sauce.
