These warm, summery days call for a cool, refreshing treat. Whether we are cooking on the grill, or having a play day outdoors, I love preparing a tasty, cold beverage for the whole family. This mangonada recipe only takes 15 minutes! So even on an impromptu adventure, this Mexican fruit juice is easy to whip up.
If you have never tried it, Mangonada is a frozen Mexican beverage. This is one of my most loved fruit drinks. It is sweet, tangy, and a little bit spicy. They’re beautiful to look at and they taste delicious. It’s a super fun divergence from your usual lemonade or slushie. It's seriously amazing! Some grocery stores have these ingredients, but you can also go to an authentic Mexican store for a one stop shop experience.
Why You'll Love This Mangonada
- Flavor Adventure – This treat manages to have a little bit of spiciness, a little saltiness, a generous dose of tanginess, and lots of sweetness. This quality makes it unique to other drinks. Chamoy Mango is the best combination of flavors and is one of my favorite Mexican drinks. Have fun with your kids talking about what they taste. Best of all it's made at home.
- Blend with Benefits – While this drinkable treat may be garnished with a candy straw, its sweetness mostly comes from the natural sugars found in mango, which hosts a range of health benefits, including antioxidants, and a heavy dose of Vitamin C! It's like an ice cream sherbet with no dairy.
Ingredients For Mangonada
- Frozen Mango – You will want to use frozen over fresh mango, because it helps achieve the icy consistency desired in the finished product.
- Ice – You definitely need ice cubes tor blending!
- Mango Nectar - This beverage gets its mango flavor from both the frozen mango and the juice. The juice is essential to keep the blender moving.
- Lime – This will give the drink a delightful tanginess. Opt for freshly squeezed lime juice.
- Chamoy Sauce – This pickled fruit sauce will add tanginess, spiciness, and a hint of salt. It will get swirled into the beverage. You can omit this for children if desired.
- Tajin – This chili lime seasoning will add a fun kick to the drink. You can also omit this, but it's a rather mild spice.
- Tamarindo Candy Straws – These tamarind candy straws are not essential, but are a fun addition! I recommend splurging for them if you can!
How to Make Mangonada
- Blend mango, ice, lime juice and mango nectar in a blender
- Divide the chili lime seasoning to one bowl and chamoy to the another.
- Prepare cups by dipping the rim in the chamoy, then dipping in the tajin seasoning.
- Pour desired amount of chamoy around the rim and add chopped mangos. Fill the cups with the mangonada mixture and garnish with a tamarindo candy straw, additional cubed mango and chili lime seasoning.
Step by Step Instructions
First, prepare the base of the beverage! Let's make mango sorbet. Place your frozen mango, ice, lime juice, and mango nectar juice in your blender. Blend until smooth, adding more frozen mango or mango juice as needed.
Next, get two small plates or bowls. Place your Chamoy on one, and your Tajin on the other. I feel like these are staple ingredients to Mexican drinks.
Prepare your cups! First, dip the rim of the cups into the Chamoy, and then into the Tajin (a kind of chili powder blend).
If using fresh mango for garnish, add a few cubes to the bottom of your cups, reserving some for the top later. Add a tablespoon of Chamoy, and swirl the cup to distribute the sauce. Pour your mango mixture into the cups. Top with any extra cubed mango, and an extra sprinkling of Tajin. Garnish with a tamarindo candy straw. For an authentic Mexican experience, I wouldn't skip out on these ingredients!
Cook's Tips
- Can't find mango nectar, or wish to cut down on sugar? You can substitute orange juice or water
- If your mango mixture is too watery, add more frozen mango. If it is too thick, or you are having a hard time blending, add more mango juice.
- Tajin is the name brand version of this chili lime seasoning, but it is okay to use another brand. Any chili lime seasoning for drinks or candy will work.
- Some friends adding hot sauce or a salt rim to this mangonada. But personally I think how the recipe is stated here is great !
- Want to make this a Mexican cocktail? Add some tequila to the blend.
FAQ
Mangonada is a sippable frozen treat found across Mexico. It is also sometimes called a Chamoyada or Chamango.
Mango, lime, and spice make Mangonadas sweet, spicy, tangy, and a little salty. It's one of my favorite Mexican foods!
While Mangonada is certainly a treat, and not an everyday beverage, it is a considerably healthy one! Most of the sweetness comes from the natural sugars in the mango, which is also packed with antioxidants and Vitamin C. If you want to make it even healthier, you can swap fresh mango juice for the mango nectar, and forego the tamarindo straws. Either way, it is a dessert beverage that you can feel good about!
I would consider the spicy level as mild. The spicyness comes from Tajin seasoning. So you can omit if desired.

I just did this recipe and everything turned out extremely well, definitely will be making this again! I will say, I like mine a little more frozen, so what I did was put the extra in the freezer overnight , and threw it in the fridge an hour or so before I was ready to eat it
Thanks so much for trying! Thanks for the tip! Some folks like it less frozen so that's a great idea!
