This fun snack idea is a huge Tik Tok trend lately, and I immediately knew I had to try it with my own twist. Pasta chips are so fun! They’re crunchy and crispy and full of flavor. You will want to eat the whole batch, especially since it only takes about 10 minutes of cook time.
The Tik Tok Recipes i've seen are typically seasoned with Italian spices, olive oil, and grated Parmesan cheese, and are often served with marinara or pesto for dipping. I wanted to put a twist on them so I created this version, seasoned with sesame oil, soy sauce, and a blend of Asian seasonings. Another reason I love this trend is that it is a great way to use up leftover pasta. Often I will make a whole pot of pasta and my family will love it, but for some reason no one is quite as excited for leftovers. This recipe makes great use of that cooked pasta, in a fresh new way that won’t feel like leftovers at all. Move over baked feta pasta recipe!
Why You'll Love Pasta Chips
- Fried in a Flash – This recipe takes less than 30 minutes from start to finish. The steps couldn’t be simpler, and are made even quicker and easier if you are using leftover pasta for this recipe.
- Keep it Fresh – Who doesn’t love snacking on chips? But these fresh, homemade pasta chips are next level. Plus, never get bored of your leftovers again! Turn last night’s pasta dinner into today’s fun appetizer, snack, or side dish. Not only are you changing the way you serve the pasta, you can also change the flavors. In this recipe, plain pasta noodles become a crunchy, Asian spice infused snack! Also, these don't have as much preservatives like traditional potato chips.
Ingredients For Air Fryer Pasta Chips
- Pasta – For this recipe, I use one box of bowtie pasta. You can use any kind of pasta as long as the noodles are on the bigger side. The bigger the noodle, the better it is for dipping, so if you love this with bowties, try rigatoni, penne, ziti, shells, or even lasagna noodles. You’ll want to break them up a bit, if choosing the latter.
- Sesame Oil – Sesame oil is kind of magical. It helps food crisp, like other cooking oils, but it also adds a great punch of flavor. Just a little sesame oil goes a long way, so don’t overdo it!
- Soy Sauce – Soy sauce is a signature component of the Asian flavoring in these pasta chips. Adding too much liquid will keep your pasta from crisping up, so don’t oversaturate them.
- Ginger – Ground ginger is essential in this Asian seasoning blend! A little sweet and a little zesty, ginger brings a unique flavor to any dish.
- Onion Powder – This dish is also seasoned with onion powder. It helps to round out the big flavors in the dish, and provides a savory bottom note.
- Garlic – This recipe would not be complete without a little garlic. Powdered garlic works best for seasoning these pasta chips.
- Red Pepper – Red pepper flakes are optional in this dish. Adjust the amount according to your desired spice level. You may also want to sprinkle some on at the end for garnish. I also recommend garnishing with sesame seeds.
How to Make Tik Tok Pasta Chips
- Cook pasta according to box directions and drain the excess water.
- Coat cooked pasta with sesame oil, soy sauce and generously sprinkle with ground ginger, onion powder, garlic powder and red pepper flakes, if desired.
- Air fry for 10-12 minutes, at 390F, shaking the basket half way through cooking. Serve warm or room temp with dipping sauce or as is. Garnish with extra red pepper flakes or sesame seeds.
Step by Step Instructions
First, cook your pasta according to the instructions on the box. I like to cook it a little more than al dente. Once it has finished cooking, drain the water and allow it to cool enough to handle.
Next, you'll want to drizzle your cooked pasta with the soy sauce and sesame oil. Toss to ensure that your pasta is evenly coated. Now you'll want to create your seasoning blend! In a small bowl, mix your ground ginger, onion powder, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes. Next, sprinkle a liberal amount of your seasoning blend onto your pasta, mixing to give an even coating.
Finally it is time to cook the pasta chips! Spread your pasta in the air fryer basket, taking care not to overcrowd. Cook in batches if needed. Air fry your pasta chips at 390 F for 5-6 minutes.
Pause cooking to shake the basket, and then resume cooking for an additional 5-6 minutes.
Garnish with red pepper flakes or sesame seeds, if desired. Enjoy your pasta chips warm or at room temperature.
Cook's Tips
- Leftovers can be kept in an airtight container on the countertop for up to 3 days
- Bowties work well, but you can use any large pasta noodles, such as rigatoni, penne, ziti, shells, or broken up lasagna noodles. Keep in mind that the thicker the noodles, the longer they will take to cook. If you use something larger than bowties, add an additional minute to the cook time in the air fryer.
- If you love this snack, turn it into a full blown appetizer by creating pasta chip nachos! Layer your cooked pasta chips on the bottom of a dish. Drizzle generously with your favorite sauce. Teriyaki, peanut sauce, cilantro mint chutney, yogurt dip, and hummus all complement this recipe nicely. Then, add your choice of protein. Some ideas include shredded chicken, tuna, seasoned scrambled tofu, beans or lentils. Add a little more sauce and garnish with chopped green onion, sesame seeds, crushed peanuts or a sriracha drizzle. Enjoy!
FAQ
Aside from making another sauce for your repurposed pasta, you an definitely make these pasta chips! This would work with more of the individual pieces however, like bow tie pasta or rigatoni pasta.
The air fryer is excellent at getting foods crispy. While I wouldn’t recommend using the air fryer to reheat your leftover pasta, it does a great job at crisping these tasty pasta chips! So skip the sauce and turn your leftover pasta into chips with this recipe.
If you don’t have access to an air fryer, you can deep-fry your pasta chips. If you are using this method, don’t season them ahead of time. Instead, deep fry the noodles, allow them to cool on a paper towel until you are able to handle them. Then, immediately sprinkle with your seasoning blend. Alternatively, you can also cook your pasta chips in the oven at 400 F for 15-20 minutes.
