Spring is in full swing, and I love all of the colors and flavors that come along with it. Blueberry is a classic example of one of those quintessentially spring flavors. Blueberries evoke imagery of sunhats and picnics in the park. I wanted to bottle that feeling – or at least make it drinkable! This blueberry latte does the trick and you can make it in less than 10 minutes (probably the same amount of time you're spending at the drive through at half the cost).
I believe that you should celebrate your morning cup, not just tolerate it. This blueberry latte is a beautiful way to start your day. If you don’t have access to an espresso machine, don’t worry; there are a few other ways you can enjoy this beverage!
Why You'll Love This Blueberry Latte
- Skip the Line – Enjoy the quality of a handcrafted beverage from your favorite coffee shop, but without the wait!
- Berry Versatile – This recipe makes 4 servings of blueberry compote, and trust me – you’ll want to put the leftovers on everything! Try it on vanilla ice cream, yogurt, cheesecake, French toast, or pancakes.
Ingredients for Iced Blueberry Latte
- Blueberries – This recipe is so convenient because you can use frozen blueberries! If you choose to use fresh blueberries, keep an eye on them, as they will cook faster. I prefer fresh fruit instead of blueberry syrup.
- Brown Sugar – The molasses notes in brown sugar help to marry the bright, acidic blueberries and the bitter coffee. The flavor is reminiscent of pie!
- Vanilla Extract – Vanilla provides a nice base note to round out your blueberry compote.
- Milk – You will need about 6 ounces of milk to make your iced blueberry latte. You can use any milk or milk alternative of your choice!
- Espresso – If you have an espresso machine, this part is easy, but if you don’t, you can et some instant espresso! Cold brew or iced coffee would not be a good substitute since a latte recipe starts with espresso.
- Ice – You will need about 1 cup of ice. If you prefer your latte hot, you can omit this part, of course!
- Optional Garnish – You can top your blueberry latte with whipped cream if you wish. Coconut or almond whipped cream work great for a dairy-free option. An extra drizzle of blueberry can also add to the presentation of your drink!
How to Make It
- Over medium high heat combine the blueberries, brown sugar and vanilla in a small pot. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Liquid should be smooth and blueberries should be breaking down. Set aside to cool a bit.
- Transfer the compote to a small blender and pulse until smooth.
- Brew espresso and set aside.
- Layer 1-2 tbsp of blueberry compote in the cup then fill the cup with ice.
- Pour milk of choice over ice then add the espresso.
- Give it a little stir and enjoy.
Step-by-Step Instructions
First, make your blueberry compote! Heat a small pot over medium-high and add your blueberries, brown sugar, and vanilla. Cook for 2-3 minutes, until your blueberries start to break down. Set aside.
After your compote has cooled enough, transfer it to a blender and pulse the mixture until it is smooth. Keep in mind this will go directly into your drink, so you don’t want any chunks.
Brew your espresso, or coffee.
Add 1-2 tablespoons of blueberry compote to your cup, depending on your desired level of sweetness. Add your ice.
Pour your milk and espresso into the cup.
Stir gently to mix. Top with whipped cream if desired, and enjoy!
Cook's Tips
- You can use brewed espresso or instant espresso for this drink. You can also substitute decaf espresso, or a strong brewed coffee. If you use brewed coffee, you will need more.
- If you prefer sweeter coffee, you can add more blueberry compote, or add a little sugar to your espresso while it is still warm. You could also add a little coffee creamer.
- This beverage is just as delicious hot! Simply omit the ice and warm your milk before mixing!
- Pair it with a blueberry muffin to bring all the flavors together if you like! This is one of my favorite drink recipes and pairs well with cookies too.
FAQ:
Blueberry is a less common, but totally delicious flavor to add to your coffee. The brown sugar in this recipe gives it a similar flavor to a blueberry pie or crisp.
If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can make an iced latte using instant espresso. If this doesn’t appeal to you, try brewing a strong batch of coffee. If you use brewed coffee, I recommend using cream instead of milk.
The name of the drink changes, but what really matters is that you love your cup. Technically speaking, a latte is espresso and milk, while café au lait is half brewed coffee and half milk. You can also use brewed coffee and a little cream to achieve similar flavor and mouth feel to a latte.
